In Foley’s Pub, Kenmare, Ireland |
SLAINTE Y’ALL!
We are a Texan couple who, after a couple of years having a holiday home in Ireland, just moved here full time. Why Ireland you ask? We were hoping you would ask that. Follow us through a bit of history before we get to the Ireland part of our story.
WHY IRELAND
Paul was born in Massachusetts to a first generation American Irish Mother and Father. Paul’s mother was part of a large family who took pride in their Irish heritage. Paul’s father also took tremendous pride in his heritage and Paul grew up dreaming about Ireland. They moved to Texas when Paul was only a few years old. When he was finally able to visit the Emerald Isle in 2000 he felt as though he had arrived home. He immediately began the process to obtain his Irish citizenship based on his grandparent’s citizenship.
Jamie, with exception of a few years living outside the Lone Star State, is a born and raised Texan through and through. It took her a little longer to buy into the Ireland dream. Finally, on a visit to Ireland in 2010 they stayed in the small town of Kenmare in County Kerry. Looking out at the beautiful Kenmare Bay with the mountains framing it (and possibly with a pint of Harp in her hand) she said to Paul “I could live here.” So the house hunting started in earnest.

WHY A BLOG
So why do we want to blog about this? Wow! You are dead on with the helpful questions today! Once we started looking into the home buying process in Ireland we realized that it was a might bit confusing. We originally intended to blog about the home buying process and all of the ins and outs of moving to a foreign country. Unfortunately, life got in the way and we were too busy trying to stay on top of it all to blog about it. So now we are looking at it mainly as a way to keep friends and family back in the States updated on what we are up to.
The good news is that we made it. We have bought a house that, while it does need some improvements and updates, isn’t a complete renovation job. We got our two beautiful girls (the four legged, furry variety) here with only minor incidents and they are loving all of the new sights and smells. Most of all though, we are enjoying learning about our new surroundings.
So follow along with us as we navigate village life, driving on the left, and the small Irish roads while traveling through out the rest of Europe as much as time and finances will allow.
Happy Trails!
