It's that time again. No, we are not talking about the football, although it is Super Bowl Sunday. We are referring to Sunday Open House. It is time to tour another couple of rooms in Niamh Cottage. We are also only a a week and a half away from our next trip to Ireland where we will be making some major cosmetic changes (hopefully) to the cottage. So we are trying to get through a tour of all of the rooms with before photos before we get there and start creating some after photos.
Last week we toured the bathrooms, both of which are connected to bedrooms. So we felt like it only made sense that this week we tour the bedrooms. Although, in hindsight, to keep the proper flow (no plumbing pun intended) we probably should have started with the bedrooms and then toured the bathrooms. Oh well, too late now.
The Guest Room
We will start with the guest room because we figure this is the most important room to the majority of you reading this. As in “I want to see where I will be staying when I come to visit” important. It is located at the front of the house and if you look at the open house picture above, the double window on the left side of the front of the house is the window for the guest bedroom.
The guest bedroom is entered from the main hallway. The room is just big enough for two twin beds, that are currently pushed together to form a double, two night stands and an armoire to hang clothes in. Like a lot of homes in Ireland, Niamh Cottage doesn't have built in closets in the bedroom. So we will have to use armoires and dressers to hold our clothing. Just inside the bedroom and to the left of the main door is the door to the bathroom.
This isn't the best picture, but we included it for two reasons. Reason number one is that it shows that the room has some additional space at the foot of the bed, so it is not as cramped as it appears in the first picture. Reason number two is that this picture was actually taken from the kitchen and shows how easy a trip from the guest bedroom into the kitchen will be for a quick, midnight snack.
The Master Bedroom
The master bedroom is located just past the end of the hallway with the door opening in an area right beside the dining room/ living room area. It is very spacious and has a good amount of natural light. The furniture, bedspread and drapes are eerily similar to what is found in the guest bedroom.

The picture above was taken from the back of the bedroom. The door on the left is the entry into the rest of the house. The doorway in the middle of the picture obviously opens into the master bathroom. To the right is a small alcove that is actually a bump out on the side of the house as shown in the pictures below.
This pictures shows the alcove on the inside and outside of the house. It has tall narrow windows on each side. There is currently a small dresser in the space, but we intend to put a desk or vanity there to take advantage of the windows and natural light.
The master bedroom has a total of four windows in it, so it is going to be a very bright room, even on dreary, Irish weather days. The largest window in the room faces Kenmare Bay and also has spectacular views of the mountains. Nice.
Our Plans
The carpet in both bedrooms will be removed and then replaced with hardwood floors. The walls and doors will get a fresh coat of paint. As far as the furniture, when we get to Ireland we need to give it a really good inspection to see what will stay and what will go. While we eventually plan to change out all of the furniture, that won't be possible on our first trip there. What we decide to keep will most likely get a few coats of paint to give the rooms a brighter, updated look.
The bedspreads and drapes will all be replaced. As soon as possible. We will be taking some basic linens with us, but we will be looking for comforters, shams, and matching drapes during our time there. We really have a lot that we are going to try to cram into just a couple of weeks.
That concludes the bedroom tour. Thank you for joining us.
Sláinte Y'all!
